Mark your calendars for December 15, 2017!  The clock is quickly ticking towards the deadline to sign up for health insurance for 2018. The 2018 open enrollment period is shorter than in previous years.  The window opened on November 1, 2017 and the enrollment period ends on December 15, 2017. If you obtain health insurance through the Marketplace, it is important that you don’t miss the looming deadline.

After December 15 it will be too late to enroll, re-enroll or change your 2018 coverage, unless you have a life event that qualifies you to make a change outside of the enrollment period.  If do you qualify for a change through any of these life events you must act quickly – you only have 60 days after the event to enroll. Some of the more common life events that qualify you for a special enrollment period include:

  • Getting married
  • Losing coverage due to legal separation or divorced
  • Having a baby or adopting a child
  • Losing your employer insurance coverage
  • Having COBRA coverage expire
  • Turning 26 and losing coverage on your parents insurance
  • Moving to a new home in a new zipcode
